Tips for Road Tripping with Pets

Tips for road tripping with pets

Our Pups

We have two dogs: Max an Australian Shepherd and Boarder Collie mix, Milo a giant Maltese. He was supposed to be tops 8 pounds so although he is still small at 21 he definitely out grew where he was supposed to haha. Both of them love exploring, and going new places but actually have high anxiety in the car so we give them these Pet Honesty Advanced treats and they love them! Click the picture for the link!

The Most Forgotten Task

Check your vet records and make sure your pets are up to date on all of their vaccinations. This includes up to date on all heart worming medications. Make sure to bring this record with you as you never know if you will need to share it with someone. Make sure your pet tags are up to date as road trips bring new experiences for all and your pet could react suddenly. We do not have our dogs microchipped. They do however sell these GPS tracking collars that would be helpful as a precautionary measure.

Pet Friendly Accommodations

Generally when we take van trips with are on BLM land and the dogs are free to stay with us. Depending on your road trip though make sure the destination you are heading allows pets. This is very crucial for a lot of National Parks as dogs are not allowed on the trails. Which is a majority of the park! We found this out the hard way. If you are planning a different kind of road trip use the Bring Fido app to search for pet friendly accommodations.

Packing List/Tips

  • Bring a ball and other toys your pet is comfortable with. This will help get their energy out on the stops throughout the trip.
  • Just like kids, pets need more frequent breaks than us human adults. Make sure you are stopping every couple of hours.
  • Portable pet bed, or blankets.
  • Travel food and water bowls.
  • Secure storage container for food.
  • Pet waste bags. Please me a good human and clean up after your pet!
  • Pet saddlebag with hydration reservoirs. This is very useful when hiking.
  • Dog hiking boots. Especially on rough terrain and cold temperatures this is crucial.
  • Vaccination record.
  • Updated pet tags.
