Things to Consider When Choosing a Free Campsite

  1. Amenities: When you are dispersed camping the likelihood of you having normal campground amenities is very unlikely. These amenities include water, trash, restrooms, sink, etc. Bring a trash bag and make sure to please bring your trash with you when you leave. Also be prepared to go to the bathroom outdoors and plan accordingly for water!
  2. Road Conditions: A lot of dispersed campsites listed can be difficult to get to. Before heading out it would be wise to make sure of any road closures, or the need for 4-wheel drive. This is not possible sometimes and unfortunately you find out upon arrival you are unable to get to it!
  3. Fire Regulations: Please be respectful of the safety in starting a fire at a dispersed campsite. Generally there is not a safe, regulated fire pit or fires are prohibited due to climate environments. To prevent the spread of a wild fire please keep this in mind.
  4. Cell Service: A lot of these dispersed campsites are in very remote areas. With this being said cell service is usually not reliable. Please make sure to have a map of the area to lead to any nearby recreation opportunities, or emergency services if needed.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Dispersed Campsite

  • Finding a campsite is easier with cell service and in the daylight. As soon as we know we are staying in an area we begin our search and PIN it on the map or even go visit it first so we aren't searching at night.
  • When we went on our first van trip we were SPOILED with the perfect dispersed campsites. We always had the most serene spot, usually with beautiful views. As we continued or van adventures we quickly realized this will not always be the case. We learned to be okay with that so save yourself the heartache and realize every night will be be the "picture perfect" campsite you desire, especially when running on spontaneity.
  • Just because it isn't located on one of the Apps we mentioned doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Have some fun and go off the beaten path. This is how we have found some of our best spots!

Have you tried dispersed camping before?! Where was your favorite spot? We would LOVE to see your pictures!
